Yes, if

  • You are building a small brushed quad, roughly 65 to 90 mm
  • You want to poke at an ESP32-S3 rather than a flight controller you cannot open
  • You want hardware you can actually read: schematic, BOM and firmware all public
  • You are alright soldering motor leads and flashing a board over USB
  • You are happy learning in angle or rate mode, hand flown, line of sight

No, if

  • You are building anything brushless. There are no ESC outputs on this board at all
  • You want Betaflight, INAV or any existing firmware. This runs its own, and porting is not a small job
  • You are building a 5 inch FPV quad. Wrong class of aircraft entirely
  • You need altitude hold or position hold. No barometer and no GPS, so it cannot do either
  • You want something that flies out of the box. This is a bare board and a manual

In 2024 I started a WhatsApp group because I had nobody to ask. Somewhere past the first few hundred members, one question kept coming back that none of us could answer.

It was always some version of: why did my board just do that. Not a wiring mistake, not a setting anyone had missed. The flight controller itself, behaving in a way nobody could explain, because nobody outside the factory had ever seen inside it.

So we drew our own. Three revisions and a lot of arguing in the group later, it flies. Then we put every file of it on GitHub, because a board the community cannot read would have been the same problem in a new box.
